CAM brings sax great Tia Fuller in concert
The College of Arts & Media’s Summer Music Industry Program (SMIP) has announced a spotlight concert with saxophonist extraordinaire Tia Fuller on June 20th at 7:30 p.m. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria Campus.
CU Denver Music and Entertainment Industries Studies faculty members Todd Reid, Greg Garrison, and Peter Stoltzman, all talented professional musicians, will perform with Fuller.
In addition to the concert, Fuller will hold a free master class that is open to the public on June 20th at 10am in the Recital Hall at the King Center. As part of the class, she will give a lecture about women in jazz and answer questions about her career.
Fuller has joined forces with CU Denver’s Summer Music Industry Program faculty as an artist-in-residence. Engaging directly with Fuller provides students with a real-life context to what they are learning in the classroom.
Fuller’s commitment to the education of future musicians aligns perfectly with the mission of CU Denver’s SMIP: to help students achieve a higher level of artistic and instrumental proficiency while improving their industry-relevant musical skills critical to pursuing a career in music.
“I’m excited to be back in town to work with the diverse population of teens at CU Denver’s Summer Music Industry Program,” said Fuller. “I have embraced that one of my main purposes is to inspire, educate and be a light for others. For the musicians of tomorrow, I encourage them to move forward with a crystalized vision, in faith and not fear, with decisive steps.”
An Aurora, Colorado native, Fuller believes her passion for teaching and inspiring students is in her genes; her parents, jazz musicians Fred and Elthopia Fuller, were educators/administrators in the Denver Public School district.
CU Denver joins an impressive list of institutions where Fuller has lectured and taught, including Stanford University’s “Jazz Workshop” and the University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. In 2013, Fuller joined the faculty ranks at the Berklee College of Music.
Fuller has toured with Beyonce, Esperanza Spaulding and with her own band. She describes her music as “anchored in bop, post-bop with a fusion of R&B, Latin and gospel. Overall, inspiring and uplifting music.”
