DENVER – Congratulations, Mix. After all their hard work preparing for SoJam, University of Colorado Denver’s a cappella group Mix, can finally take a breath. Returning for the second year in a row, they stole the show and won first place. The performers put a lot of effort into both their set piece and their performance, so the win solidifies their success.
“The competition was so excellent, there was such a high standard of musicianship that night,” director Erin Hackel said.
Performing against five of the nation’s top teams, Mix had some stiff competition. “It was a nail biter to the very end,” Hackel said. “Reverb from FSU was just so musical and talented; their last set going head to head with Mix was so beautifully done and told an incredible story.”
Many elements go into such a big competition. Mix designed an elaborate set piece that could be used in different ways with all of their sets. It served to be worth the hard work, snagging them an “Outstanding Visual Presentation” award in addition to taking 1st.
What’s coming up in the Mix
With an encouraging win under their belt, Mix is already auditioning for their next show. The Los Angeles A Cappella Festival (LAAF) is coming up in January and Mix has some work to do before then.
“We got so munch feedback from the incredible singers and professionals at SoJam that we need to apply to our music, looking forward to making even more improvements and some incredible moments in out upcoming repertoire,” Hackel said.
